Module: Recognising and responding to LGBTQA+ people impacted by DFV

Thanks to funding provided by North Western Melbourne PHN, this module is currently available FREE of charge for all primary care staff.

Learn practical ways to strengthen your skills in identifying and responding to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer/questioning, asexual/aromantic and other people of diverse genders and sexualities (LGBTQA+) who are impacted by domestic and family violence (DFV). We outline how to provide safe, empathic, and effective care for people in the LGBTQA+ community affected by DFV, including how to conduct a risk assessment for patients who disclose DFV, and safe and appropriate first-line response pathways.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module you should be able to:

  1. Describe the nature, prevalence, drivers and impacts of domestic and family violence DFV for LGBTQA+ communities.

  2. Explain how societal, systemic, community and individual drivers can intersect to contribute to LGBTQA+ experiences of DFV.

  3. Discuss how health practitioner knowledge, attitudes and behaviours can impact disclosure and help-seeking by LGBTQA+ people and how clinicians can enhance their experiences of accessing care.

  4. Understand how to conduct a risk assessment when an LGBTQ+ patient discloses DFV.

  5. Outline safe and appropriate first-line response pathways addressing the needs of LGBTQA+ people impacted by DFV.
