Module: Recognising and responding to domestic, family and sexual violence experienced by ethnic and racial minority women

Thanks to funding provided by North Western Melbourne PHN, this module is currently available FREE of charge for all primary care staff.

 

Learn practical ways to strengthen your skills in recognising and responding to DFSV experienced by women of ethnic and racial minority backgrounds. We outline how to build a culturally safe and help-seeking primary care environment and the skills, self-awareness, and whole of practice collaboration required to support your patients.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module you should be able to:

  1. Discuss the context and impact of DFSV for women of ethnic and racial minority backgrounds.

  2. Outline how to identify, assess the level of risk and safety, and respond to women with a minority ethnic/racial background who are at risk of, or are experiencing DFSV, in culturally appropriate ways.

  3. Discuss the importance of employing a collaborative service delivery model with relevant multicultural community services and specialist DFSV services as an integral part of the family violence response system.

  4. Explain the barriers women of ethnic and racial minority backgrounds may experience when seeking support for DFSV.

  5. Reflect upon the importance of health practitioner self-awareness of individual cultural biases and assumptions

  6. Describe factors that promote a culturally safe environment in primary care for women from ethnic and racial minority backgrounds presenting with DFSV.
