Module: Identifying People who have used Domestic and Family Violence
Learn practical ways to identify and respond to people who have used or are at risk of using domestic and/or family violence. We outline how to establish a safe and collaborative environment in order to ask a patient about their use of violence, conduct basic risk assessments, manage risk, and motivate a patient towards referrals that will support behaviour and attitude change.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module you should be able to:
Discuss the nature, severity, and impact of domestic and family violence.
Identify patient presentations, narratives and behaviours that may be indicative of use of domestic and family violence
Describe how to safely and sensitively ask patients about use of violence and assess their level of risk
Explain how to use motivational interviewing and strengths-based principles to explore behaviour and attitudinal change
