Maggie Bell: Walk in my shoes

“Walk In My Shoes”

Description: One of the most significant pieces I have created, in collaboration with my Art Therapist, Chris Petrie, is the “Walk In My Shoes” installation. It consists of 88 pairs of shoes, each pair symbolizing the women, children, and babies who tragically lost their lives to DV in Australia, in 2015 (a particularly high incidence of annual DV deaths). This installation, originally conceived as a trial at my April 2022 exhibition alongside the haunting 'Wedding Dress,' I would like to see exhibited around the country as part of other exhibitions such as the up-coming Burrijga exhibition or as a travelling show.

The 88 pairs of shoes serve as poignant, silent witnesses to the pain and suffering endured by countless victims of DV. They beckon to the audience, igniting much-needed conversations about the harsh realities of DV. They challenge misconceptions with unspoken answers to the question, "Why don't you just leave?"

Thank you to the amazing WEAVERS who created these words and artwork.
