Maggie Bell: “My Throw Away Heart”

Description:

In crafting "My Throw Away Heart," I repurposed a discarded electrical cable to sculpt a heart that became both my medium and metaphor. Utilizing a combination of deliberate throws and carefully composed placements, I captured the essence of these fleeting moments through the lens of my smartphone.

This body of work serves as a visual exploration of the emotional aftermath of departing a long-term domestic violence relationship, where the absence of support led me to channel unspoken and painful feelings into art. The heart, a symbol of vulnerability and resilience, embodies the complex emotions I grappled with during this transformative period.

As I navigated the aftermath of leaving, my perpetrator swiftly replaced me within a month, leaving me with the visceral sensation of having my heart callously discarded. "My Throw Away Heart" stands as a testament to the power of art as a cathartic expression and a means of reclaiming agency in the face of heartbreak and abandonment.
